In autumn 1993, in collaboration with the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and experts from China, we developed a comprehensive seminar on clean coal technology. The five-day seminar was delivered in Beijing in December 1993, bringing together 28 member company representatives with approximately 60 Chinese experts.

GSEP members and Chinese experts presented at the seminar on the complete coal cycle, with detailed discussions on pre-combustion, combustion and post-combustion technologies complementing the presentations. GSEP member representatives highlighted the technologies that were being used by their respective companies, and the Chinese experts shared their expertise on the trends they were seeing in these fields.

At the closing ceremony of this seminar, a memorandum was signed with the Chinese Ministry of Electric Power, acknowledging the mutual deep interest for the protection of the global environment and the sustainable development of the planet. Furthermore, the memorandum encouraged future discussion to take place to identify other proposals for joint cooperation.

As a result of this seminar, the GSEP accepted to work in 1995 with the Chinese Ministry of Electric Power on their Demand Side Management Strategy
