When: 1997

Where: Jordan

What: Developing Technical Skills

Following the completion of a successful workshop on environmental management in 1995 with the National Electric Power Company (NEPCO) in Jordan, and a fruitful cooperation on the energy efficiency project in Jordan, we partnered up again to assist NEPCO in developing a demand-side management (DSM) plan.

We organized and delivered a workshop on DSM from September 6-9, 1997 in Amman, Jordan attended mainly by NEPCO engineers and managers.

Following the DSM workshop, NEPCO initiated the development of a DSM plan under an integrated resource planning (IRP) framework. Our team of member experts assisted NEPCO in reviewing its organizational structure with respect to DSM and in defining the structure needed to create a DSM technology database. For sectors where data was not available, the GSEP team provided data from their own organizations (where applicable) and recommended ways in which NEPCO could collect additional data within Jordan.

With our technical assistance, NEPCO was able to define a DSM plan that took into consideration the results of the current tariff study and changes in government regulations and defined the most suitable programs from implementation under IRP. This activity also helped raise awareness and interest among appropriate stakeholders in participating in the development and implementation of the DSM plan, such as the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources and end-use customers.
