Demand-Side Management Workshops in the Pacific Islands

When: 2009, 2010

Where: Pacific Islands

What: Developing Technical Skills

Key objectives

  • To train managers and engineers in the Pacific Islands on demand-side management

When: 2009, 2010

Where: Pacific Islands

What: Developing Technical Skills

We teamed up with the Pacific Power Association (PPA) to deliver two workshops on demand-side management. These workshops provided CEOs and engineers from local utility companies with the tools to promote energy conservation on the demand side, but also helped them with the future implementation of efficient demand-side programs that will reduce both CO2 emissions and the costs associated with importing fossil fuel.

The workshops were led by GSEP member Kansai Electric Power. The first workshop was held from November 2-6, 2009 in Fiji for the Southern Pacific Island utilities and the second workshop was held in Palau from March 22-26, 2010 for the Northern Pacific Island utilities. A total of 39 participants from 20 utility companies attended the workshops. The participants attended lectures and took part in hands-on technical training sessions.

These two workshops were part of a series of human capacity-building programs GSEP has led in the region in partnership with PPA since 2005. With this program, we are helping develop local capacity and knowledge in the different aspects of energy project development and implementation in Small Island Developing States that are the most vulnerable to climate change. These workshops were particularly timely and well-received, as many utilities in the Pacific region are in the process of implementing country-wide demand-side management programs.
