Technical Expertise Workshops on Coal-Fired Power Plants

When: 2007

Where: USA, Germany (targeting African and Asian utilities)

What: Developing Technical Skills

Key objectives

  • To share our members’ technical expertise with engineers and technical staff from developing countries’ coal-fired power plants on improving the efficiency and environmental performance of their fleets’ units, resulting in reduced CO2 emissions

When: 2007

Where: USA, Germany (targeting African and Asian utilities)

What: Developing Technical Skills

From improvements made on the efficiency and environmental performance of their fleets’ units over many years, our member companies have learned that the greatest increases in efficiency are the result of integrated and scheduled changes in equipment, maintenance activities, operation activities and a well-informed and supportive corporate culture. These changes in technology and processes improved the efficiency of coal-fired power plants, reduced the companies’ CO2 emissions and enhanced particulate emission control.

For these reasons, we developed two technical workshops to share this expertise with engineers and technical staff from coal-fired power plants in developing countries.

These workshops were designed to facilitate the transfer of knowledge and technological know-how among experts. This was done through face-to-face discussions as well as through plant visits where participants met with plant engineers and technical staff who were directly involved in the implementation of the technologies and processes in question.

The workshop discussions, which included top engineers and technical experts from the participating member companies, were at a substantive and detailed level so that lessons learned could be applied by the participants and result in tangible improvements in generating efficiency and reduction of air emissions. The workshops focused on the sharing of practical engineering experiences in actual power plants, with the possibility of following up and continuing a relationship beyond the workshop sessions.

RWE Workshop

This ten-day workshop took place at RWE from March 12-23, 2007, in Cologne, Germany, and was divided into four parts: emissions reduction strategy, corporate organization and emissions, operations & maintenance strategy, and environmental monitoring.

AEP Workshop

This five-day workshop took place at AEP from May 21-25, 2007, in Columbus, Ohio, USA, and covered different key aspects of emissions reduction strategy, corporate organization and emissions, operations & maintenance strategy, including leak detection methods, outage planning, retrofits and life optimization, and heat rate monitoring.
