GSEP leads workshop on PPPs in energy storage and universal energy access in Latin America
GSEP partnered with the UN Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) for a fourth collaboration to organize a workshop on the role PPPs play in promoting energy storage and energy access in the region. Supported by CAF (Development Bank of Latin America), the Federal Republic of Germany (through its cooperation agency, GIZ), and the UN Secretary General’s Sustainable Energy for All secretariat, this event is the first one of its kind in Latin America.
The event attended by more than 60 experts and decision-makers was opened by a high-level panel composed of Mrs. Elizabeth Thompson, Senior Advisor to the CEO of the Sustainable Energy for All, Mr. José da Costa Carvalho Neto, CEO of Eletrobras and Chairman of GSEP, Mr. Ricardo Sanchez, Acting Chief, NRID, ECLAC, Eng. Hamilton Moss, Vice President on Energy, CAF, Hon. Issa Kort, President, Energy Commission, Latin American Parliament and Dr. Christoph Bundscherer, Head of the Department for Economic Affairs and Global Issues, Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany in Brazil.
In her opening speech, Mrs. Thompson, attending on behalf of Dr. Kandeh Yumkella, remarked that: "If we are to achieve the goals of Sustainable Energy for All, it is critical to address the topics proposed in this conference… The capacity to store energy in relation to renewables is going to shape or refrain our sustainable energy platform…. We know that new technologies and access to energy have historically been linked to quality of life, improved economies and social mobility. Then the next step in human development and human economic activity must be predicated on sustainable sources of energies".
Mr. José da Costa Carvalho Neto pointed out that: "In terms of the SE4ALL initiative’s goal of universal access to energy, Brazil has made a huge effort in the last decade to provide access to more than 15 million people of the country’s 200 million inhabitants. Today, more than 99% of the population is served and by 2017 the ratio will reach 100%".
This workshop is part of GSEP’s PPP for Sustainable Electricity Development Program, a series of regional conferences worldwide aimed at empowering decision-makers by helping define best practices and strategies for the successful implementation of PPP in the sector.
