Summary

Energy storage is crucial to stabilizing power grids and will play a key role in making networks more efficient, resilient and cleaner than ever before. Since 2014, GSEP member company Hydro-Québec has been working with Sony on a joint business venture to research and develop large-scale energy storage systems for power grids. This webinar presents the work of Hydro-Québec’s joint venture, called Esstalion Technologies, which is developing a state-of-the-art lithium-ion battery that is safe and can be rapidly charged.

About the speaker

Dr. Karim Zaghib

Dr. Karim Zaghib is the Director of Energy Storage and Conversion at Hydro-Québec’s research institute, IREQ. In 2016 and 2017, he was named by Clarivate Analytics (formerly Thomson Reuters) as one of The World’s Most Influential Scientific Minds, one of the most prestigious honours in the field. He holds a doctorate in electrochemistry from the Université de Grenoble, France and has worked at Hydro-Québec since 1995, where he is responsible for many projects involving lithium-ion technology for battery materials.
